In Canada's northern climate, Mother Nature often needs help to extend our growing season. 

In 1967, David Siminovitch and James Butler developed a nontoxic, protein-based version of fire-fighting foam that successfully protected row-crop plantings of tomatoes and strawberries against overnight frosts. Application of the foam to crops could be accomplished by both stationary and mobile equipment. In early 'field' tests, applications of foam permitted earlier spring planting of tomatoes and reduced the risk of frost damage to the maturing crop in the fall.
