60 Years of Canadian Innovation - Week 17The Yukon Gold potato is this week's Canadian innovation. Many of us will remember seeing these in the grocery store for the first time when they were introduced. Making them notable was not only their yellow flesh but also the taste, both of which were a big departure from the standard potato offerings of the day. Since then, they've become a solid favorite of Canadians.
This potato variety was developed by Gary Johnston along with Geoff Rowberry at the University of Guelph in the early 1960s however, the official strain which became Yukon Gold, was created in 1966. In the spirit of "good things come to those who wait", it wasn't until 1980 when it was finally brought to market.
