60 Years of Canadian Innovation - Week 15For many, it is the only way to close out a Saturday evening on the town in Halifax. Just the mention of it brings back wonderful memories of standing on a street corner eating your last meal of the night and often, the first of the next day! Yes, I'm speaking of the Donair!
The Donair, a version of the Turkish doner kabob, was created in the 1970s by Peter Gamoulakos at Velos Pizza in Bedford, Nova Scotia. Gamoulakos modified the traditional gyro recipe for the local market by replacing lamb with beef and creating a new sweet sauce. In 1973 he opened the first King of Donair which has since developed a cult-like following.
